8 Exfoliation Mistakes You’re Making, and How to Avoid Them

When it comes to exfoliating, the worst mistake you can make is not doing it. Because, beauties, if you've ever wanted skin that glows, feels as tight as a drum and as soft as a baby's arse, there's one surefire way to get it: exfoliation. Moisturizers will promise the same results all day long, though following through on all those promises is hit or miss. And even if they do deliver, it usually takes weeks to see any results. Not so with exfoliating. Done right, you'll have a gorgeous complexion in 10 minutes or less.

Convinced that this is a must-have addition to your beauty regimen yet? For those women who exfoliate on the reg, take note: Even the most faithful exfoliating adherents might be sacrificing their perfect skin by making one of these mistakes listed below. I was one of them! So read (and then exfoliate) on.

You're Forcing Your Skin to Overcompensate

Any woman who's seen the effects of a good exfoliation job firsthand will be tempted to think, "The more the better." But this just isn't true. Especially for women with oily or dry skin. If you slough off the surface layer of dead skin too often, your body will overcompensate by producing more oil or becoming even drier. You really shouldn't be exfoliating more than two times per week, three tops. And for most women once a week is perfect.

You're Going Too Hard, Too Fast

Again, you might think, "If I go harder, my skin will be even softer and glow even more!" But your skin is delicate. If you cut it, it bleeds. And exfoliating scrubs, brushes and stones can cut it at the microscopic level, causing damage that might even produce scarring in the future. But you'll never have to worry if you use a "gentle, circular motion" to wipe away dead skin.

You're Not Doing Your Body Good (or At All)

Removing that top layer of dead skin on your face does wonders for reviving and removing that pasty or gray, dull hue you get from natural dryness. It helps new cells literally shine on the surface. Skin not only looks better, it IS better. Healthier. And younger. So why save all that for your face? Give your body the treatment too, and don't forget your hands, neck and chest. Your middle-aged self will thank you.

You Think a Dry Scrub is Most Effective

Dry scrubbing is a bad idea. Like any other effort meant to supercharge your exfoliation efforts (and results), this leads to all kinds of damage. It's painful to even think about it. Always make sure you've got water in the mix when you exfoliate.

You're Not Moisturizing Afterwards

So, you're using water (which is good) but water, especially warm and hot water, robs your skin of its moisture. And since you've just taken off a layer of dead skin, you've just removed a protective barrier that keeps your natural moisture inside. (Albeit, an unattractive barrier, but a barrier nonetheless.) What to do? Moisturize as soon as you're done exfoliating, every time.

You're Making Your Breakout Worse

Full disclosure, I've actually cured a major bangs-induced forehead breakout via exfoliating (gently) with baking soda. In part because baking soda is antibacterial. The extra oil and bacteria were killed off, helping those little white bumps go bye-bye. Having said that, if you have a rash, eczema, rosacea or the type of breakout that's broken skin, you need to skip exfoliating and treat it with proper care (preferably prescribed by your dermatologist).

You're Not Going Au Naturale

Finally, read the label of whatever you purchase to exfoliate. The beauty industry is still, sadly, rife with harsh chemicals. Before you're tempted to buy that little $50 miracle jar that promises exfoliation beads and 13 other benefits, try something natural instead. Baking soda made into a paste with water is an alternative I swear by, but you can also use brown or white sugar, and oatmeal. Don't forget the water! Give "DIY exfoliating" a Google search and see what you come up with. When you do look at recipes, make sure you find one that says it works for your particular skin type.

Orange Lips for Every Girl: Find Your Perfect Shade

I'm going to resist beginning this article with "orange you glad…" and assume you've heard it before. You've peeped orange lips on the runway and they've been touted as one of spring's hottest trends. And if you weren't convinced at first, maybe the fact that our favorite celebrities have been adopting the color on red carpets in droves has you wondering whether you can pull off an orange lip.

Our answer is, of course! Fashion is meant to be fun, and while we'll always love our pinks and reds, this is one lip color that will add a totally fresh spin to whatever you put on this spring (even if it's your favorite sundress from five years ago). The key is to wear orange in a way that works for you, your skin tone and ultimately your comfort level. Just because you saw a neon version on the runway doesn't mean you can't use it as inspiration for a more subtle version. Or vice versa.

Check out the best lip colors in our runway-celeb mashup below, along with our advice to help you make your choice.

Skincare Best Practices: How to Get the Most Out of Your Serums, Moisturizers and Creams

Wondering why that cream everyone swears by isn't doing anything for you? It might be because you're not applying it correctly. Here's a look at how to apply your serum, moisturizer, sunscreen, eye cream and more.

How to apply serum

It's very important never to apply too much of a product as your skin can only absorb so much. When you layer too much on your skin, the product will sit on the surface rather than absorb. It's very easy to over-apply serums because they tend to be light and packed with actives. Generally three drops smoothed over your entire face and neck is enough.

How to apply moisturizer

If your skin feels sticky, you've applied too much. A peanut size is usually all you need.

How to apply eye cream

A pea-sized amount is enough for both eyes and it should be applied every morning and night after your moisturizer. The skin around the eye is very sensitive so use your ring finger, considered the weakest, to lightly dab in a circular motion the cream under the eye to the cheekbone, at the outer corners and underneath the brows. You'll also want to apply some onto your eyelids to help create a smooth foundation for eye makeup.

How to apply sunscreen

You need about a tablespoon of sunscreen for your face and about two ounces for your body. If you opt for chemical sunscreen, make sure you apply it at least 20 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun. Also remember that you need to be wearing it 365 days a year and when in the sun re-apply it every 90 minutes.

What order to apply your skincare products

Day: Cleanse, exfoliate, tone and then apply your sunscreen before applying any moisturizer/treatment products if you're using a chemical sunscreen as it takes 20 to 30 minutes for chemical sunscreen to bind with your skin and become activated; if you apply your moisturizer/treatment product first, this will interfere with that process. If, however, you're using a physical sunscreen, apply sunscreen last as physical sunscreens work like physical shields on the skin's surface to prevent absorption of the damaging rays.
Night: Cleanse, exfoliate, tone and then apply any moisturizer/treatment products. Toning is often skipped, but it's crucial as it helps dampen skin allowing your moisturizer/treatment products to absorb more readily.

When to apply your skincare products

Studies have shown that skin repairs itself most effectively between 10 and 11 p.m. so ideally you should be applying your night creams before this time. This also ties into the importance of sleep. When we sleep, our bodies repair and renew themselves and that includes on a cellular level in our skin. You'll also want to save your high-powered anti-aging products and retinoids for your nighttime routine since they tend to weaken in the sun.

Why Facial Oil is the Single Best Beauty Product You’re Probably Not Using

I know what you're thinking, if oil on my skin causes acne, blemishes and breakouts, aren't I doing my pretty face a disservice by slathering it in facial oil? While conventional beauty wisdom of the past might have agreed with you, today's dermatologists and aestheticians say otherwise. In fact, facial oil has the ability to help with redness, irritation and even breakouts. Read on to find out more about the beauty product you're probably not using, but should seriously consider.
What is facial oil?

Facial oil can be made from a blend of natural botanical oils or be comprised of just one type, such as the all-popular argan oil. Some oils boast added vitamins and minerals for an extra nourishing punch to your dermis. You can find them in a variety of prices, from a variety of brands and companies like The Body Shop (Tea Tree Oil, $9.50) and Bobbi Brown (Extra Face Oil, $62). And if you're on a budget, this is one beauty trick that has major DIY beauty potential. Pure virgin olive oil can be used on regular skin in place of a fancy brand name, as can pure coconut oil. The site Crunch Betty even has a three-ingredient facial oil recipe that mimics the oils available on store shelves. Different botanical blends are ideal for different skin types and purposes from anti-aging to acne. It's important to read the labels and descriptions before you buy, especially if you have a specific skin problem you're dealing with.

FAQs

While this list is by no means exhaustive, let's go ahead and address the biggest concerns women have before they try these oils:
Will they clog my skin and will they leave a greasy finish? No and No. Certain types of oils are non-comedogenic. That means they won't clog your skin. The types of oil used for facial treatments have a lightweight structure that actually makes them absorb into skin ultra fast, leaving it soft not greasy, according to Pevonia Botanicals Educator, Melissa Morris.

What type should I use? We found an awesome chart (that doesn't just promote certain brands), listing specific types of oil that should be used with specific skin concerns. Quick and easy to follow, you'll find it here.

Benefits of facial oil

Okay, so these oils are a good thing for your skin. But how and why? Natural botanical oils impart nourishment that isn't created in a lab, unlike so many moisturizers. In fact, many women take expert advice that facial oils are better for aging skin than moisturizers and use them exclusively instead of facial creams. They protect against free radicals, particles in the air that result in aging skin. Due to their fast absorption, they leave skin soft, supple and plump. Certain oils, such as argan, are anti-inflammatory, which means they help with redness and reduce irritation. They can even aid in creating better absorption of your anti-aging products, if you feel inclined to use both. It just takes applying the oil before your night cream. And while it's not meant to take the place of sunscreen, it can add extra protection to your skin when worn underneath. Overall, it delivers repairing and preventative benefits in terms of aging and can address a variety of skin concerns—naturally. Oh, and they smell great, too.

When and how to use facial oil

Facial oil can be used underneath regular skincare and beauty products or on their own. They can be used in the morning, evening or both. The key is to make sure skin is clean and dry before you apply it. Focus on problem areas with the oil of your choice and gently use circular massaging motions to help the oil get down into your skin and get its work done. Definitely read the instructions of any oil you buy at the store, too.

Revealed: Pro Makeup Tips You Can Easily Do At Home

The fact is that while I die for fashion, makeup has always been a sort of necessary evil, and one I used to avoid. So when it comes to sitting in front of the mirror with the painstaking task of creating a perfect makeup look that rivals red carpets, I've done my research. What I've found is there are two types of advice when it comes to getting the perfect look at home: the advice you can use and the advice you can't. You know, you get all excited to read a "pro" tip list and it's "go out and buy $100 worth of brushes and this expensive product from France and this powder no one has ever heard of from M.A.C." Well, I'd do much better as an amateur makeup artist with pro products, too.

What can you, or I, really do? From my own trial and error, I'm here to tell you how to start walking out of your house looking every bit the movie star. After all, before they sit down in their stylist's chairs, those movie stars pretty much look just like us.

Lips that look fuller and more defined

Line the skin on the outside of your lip line with the cream highlighter you typically use on your dark circles. Blend it in. Your lips will stand out and look more defined.

Perfect lipliner every time

The next step for a perfect lip job? The colored lip liner you use on the inside edge of your lips. It's hard to get it just right and perfectly even, but if you draw little markers that help even up your lines and fill them in, you're basically home free. So start by creating an "X" in the top-center of your top lip. The top half of the "X" should be drawn where your lip bow is. Next draw two short lines at the corner(s) of your mouth; they should look like the greater-than and less-than signs: < and >. These will give you a visual guide as you fill in the rest that helps keep your hand straight. Not to mention, many of us don't get into the corners at all (a major mistake). Now yours are all set!
Turn your favorite lipstick into longwear lipstick

After you apply your favorite lipstick, place a tissue gently over your lips. Then gently tap translucent powder over the tissue (it will get through to your lips) with a brush. Now your lipstick will last much longer.

Plumper lips

Not feeling lipstick but want a fuller look? Add cinnamon or peppermint oil to your gloss right before you apply. They're natural, temporary, lip plumpers.

Thicker brows

Grab your translucent powder and tap it on your eyebrows, then follow up with a tinted brow gel. Voila! That little over-plucking mistake is fixed.

Instant cheekbones

We all know (thanks to the Kardashians) what a difference contouring can make. But there are so many ways to do it and so many powders involved it can feel like a hassle. So, here's an easy cheekbone trick: Take an eyebrow pencil and draw two parallel lines underneath your cheekbones. Blend.

From pencil to gel liner without hitting the store

Need a dramatic line? Don't have time to get to the mall or CVS? Hold your standard pencil liner over the flame of a candle or lighter for a couple of seconds. The crayon will melt slightly and now you've got longer lasting, gel-like lines.

Eye shadow that really pops

Every season there's a bright "it" color of shadow we're tempted to try, but it just never quite looks like it does on the runway. Maybe it goes back to those expensive shadows, but if you've got the standard Rite Aid fare on your makeup table, here's how to really make them pop. First fill in your lid with a white highlighting pencil, then apply that electric blue shadow on top.
Lashes out to there (without falsie drama)

If you've got baby powder, you can have fuller looking lashes without the glue issues. First, apply a coat of mascara. Next, brush a Q-tip dipped in baby powder over them. Apply next coat. Repeat.

Dewy skin like you're sixteen

Okay, this is the one brand name product I can't find a replacement for that I highly recommend: High Beam by Benefit is a liquid highlighter with a touch of shimmer that will give your skin the perfect dewy finish that makes us all look a little more youthful. I use a stripe on the apple of my cheeks, the center of my forehead and center of my chin, all blended in of course.

A longer-lasting blowout

Ditch the hair tie. At night, twist your locks into a top bun and secure with a couple of hair pins. The next morning you'll have soft waves that can be touched up fast. No more weird kinks or broken strands from elastics.

De-puff and conceal circles—for real

Oh, so many tricks abound to depuff eyes and get rid of circles. Here's what works in a pinch: Forget the cold spoon or lemon juice or whatever the trend is this week, take out a can of soda from the fridge and hold it under your eyes to de-puff. Now, apply concealer in dots rather than stripes under your eyes. Pat to blend instead of wiping and you'll have bright eyes like the best on the red carpet.

Breathe Right At Night

If you have trouble breathing or know someone who does, then consider CPAP Supply or another company that sells products that can help get a good night’s sleep. There are a variety of products to choose from that can be placed in the home beside the bed. Some items might need to be recommended or prescribed by a doctor before ordering, but when getting items from an online company, you usually don’t need an order from a doctor.

Masks are a common item that is ordered. There are masks of various sizes to fit the face as well as those that connect to various apparatuses. You can also find the cushions to go on the mask when the one currently used needs to be replaced. Machines come in many forms, so it is important to look at the cards and the tubing that is with each one. Humidifiers and oxygen supplies are also sold that can help with breathing conditions. When dealing with CPAP products, you need to have the correct tubing that will go to the machine. Headgear is also important to keep the mask in place while you or the other person is asleep so that the mask won’t move.

Seeking treatment for personal problems

If you're dealing with health issues, chances are that you've done your research on home remedies. After all, you might feel scared or nervous to visit your physician for a sensitive problem. Unfortunately, it's difficult to correctly self-diagnose medical problems. Because of this, you need to seek treatment for vaginismus and other personal issues you may face. Instead of trying to treat something at home, you should always visit your doctor to let him diagnose the issue.

When you head to your doctor's office, you'll want to clearly and technically explain the problem. Avoid sounding embarrassed if possible. Remember that your doctor wants to help you become well again, but if you're afraid to use technical terminology, your doctor won't know what's wrong and he won't be able to treat you.

After your visit to your doctor, always follow your doctor's advice precisely. Vaginismus is nothing to be trifled with, so avoid ignoring your physician. If you're afraid that you won't remember what you're supposed to do for treatment at home, take notes during your visit. You could also use your smartphone to record the conversation at your doctor's office to ensure that you understand exactly what treatment protocols to follow after you leave the office.

Is Eye Cream Really Necessary?

The eye area is one of the 1st places to display signs of aging. All of our facial expressions as well as movements such as frowning; smiling and squinting can impact the eye area, creating laugh lines, fine lines and crow’s feet. While you don’t want to become expressionless, you can manage some of these lines, for example, by not raising your eyebrows and also causing deep lines on your forehead (it takes a conscious effort!) You can control squinting to a degree by wearing sunglasses while in the sunlight, not smoking (which also causes one to squint) and by having annual eye exams to fix any vision issues. Some other steps include taking care in eliminating eye make-up and minimizing any other tugging, pulling or rubbing of the sensitive epidermis area around the eyes.
Why Use an Eye Cream?
The skin underneath the eyes is thinner and more sensitive than the remaining face. Eye creams for daytime use assist to minimize dark circle and swelling and the nighttime versions usually have more emollients and are designed to repair your skin while you sleep. But is this just a waste of money?
Pros and Cons
There is disagreement in the cosmetic industry as to whether eye creams even really necessary or work. Some think face creams aren't designed for the most sensitive epidermis underneath the eyes. Some others believe that there are not any kind of special components in eye creams. They're unnecessary and with less than an ounce of item for a very high price, are also an unnecessary expense. Many of the eye creams, they say, contain the same components present in the best face moisturizer, for example, those to reduce wrinkles and lines and to tighten your skin.
But many facial moisturizers have warnings to avoid use around the eyes. The eye creams might be less irritating, made without fragrance and other potential problematic components. Women of color need to be very careful when it comes to makeup products because certain components can cause epidermis discoloration.
Do Eye Creams Minimize Fine Lines & Wrinkles or Make Them Worse?
Some eye creams and also serums consist of certain components such as caffeine (green tea, coffee) to temporarily minimize swelling or even components to lighten dark sectors such as vitamin K that might not be in the facial moisturizers.
Still other people say that certain eye creams can make foundation and concealer crease into lines around the eye area. Some believe eye creams are just watered down versions of facial moisturizers. That might be the case with eye serums, but many eye creams are really thicker compared to facial moisturizer because the eye area tends to be drier. This area of the eye has fewer oil glands than the remaining face. Dry epidermis also cause laugh lines, wrinkles and crow’s feet.
Eye Creams Are Not Always Necessary
Everyone seems to be in agreement which you should not use body lotions and creams on the face and eye area, but you might be able to get away with just using a facial moisturizer if it has the same components as the eye cream.

Eye cream is not always necessary. If you do not have problems with dark circle, puffiness or need to reduce your appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, you can skip the eye cream and start using an effective facial moisturizer, especially if it is made for sensitive epidermis.

Dermagist Eye Revolution Gel Review - Things You Should Be Aware Of

Dermagist Eye Revolution Gel Overview:

Maybe you have heard about the skin care company Dermagist? They’ve been around for quite some years, they were formerly called Dermajuv but changed their name to Dermagist a couple of years returning to much better reflect their increasing product line. Aside from providing high quality anti-aging creams, gels and also serums, they also include a line of acne care items.
The Eye Revolution Gel seems to be one of the most well-known items in their group and I’m not amazed – everyone seems to notice aging around the eyes 1st and it’s scary as hell when it happens.
